Sci. Seminar: Sean Andrews, Harvard & SmithsonianSean Andrews, Harvard & Smithsonian Title: Observing Planet Formation: New Insights on Building Worlds Abstract: In just the past quarter century, astronomers have discovered more than 5000 planets orbiting other stars in our galaxy. Statistical extrapolations from this population suggest that, on average, every star hosts a planetary system. These exoplanet systems are remarkably diverse, often exhibiting properties (masses, orbital architectures, compositions, etc.) considerably unlike our solar system. Much of that diversity is imprinted during the formation epoch, where planet properties are strongly influenced by interactions with their birth environments – the disks of gas and dust that orbit young stars. Until recently, much of our understanding of planet formation was limited to forensic study of a specific (and possibly outlier) example – the solar system – and was largely theoretical. But in the past few years, very high angular resolution observations of disks in nearby star-forming regions have unveiled key signatures of the planet formation epoch and are helping solve some long-standing theoretical dilemmas. This talk will focus on what we are learning about the small-scale structure and dynamics of disk material, largely based on state-of-the-art measurements with interferometers operating at (sub)millimeter wavelengths, the corresponding implications for the assembly and early evolution of planetary systems, and some expectations for progress in the coming decade. Traditional proofs addressing the regularity loss caused by these ‘small denominators’ have heavily relied on Newtonian / Nash-Moser iterations. We aim to show that the regularity loss can be compensated by composing with appropriate para-differential operators, enabling a proof using only standard fixed-point schemes. This para-differential approach can be applied to study KAM-type problems, avoiding the commonly used ‘KAM iterations.’ The talk is based on joint works with Thomas Alazard.https://events.uchicago.edu/event/232838-cz-chengyang-shao-uchicago232838Apr 1, 2024 4:00 pm 5:00 pmEckhart Hall, Room 202If you have any questions about access or to request a reasonable accommodation that will facilitate your full participation in this event such as ASL interpreting, captioned videos, Braille or electronic text, food options for individuals with dietary restrictions, etc. please contact the event organizer.Apr 2, 2024: IBD Seminar| Mapping and designing mRNA kinetics and translationSpeaker: Xiao Wang, PhD, Department of Chemistry, MIT mRNA kinetics and translation are tightly regulated in mammalian cells, including the nervous system. In this talk, I will begin by presenting a high-resolution 3D in situ sequencing approach (TEMPOmap and RIBOmap) that enables simultaneous mapping of the translation and multi-step subcellular kinetics of thousands of genes within intact cells and tissues, revealing cell-type and cell-state specific RNA regulation. Inspired by work in the compact setting, we show that knowledge of the renormalized area on a relatively small subset of minimal surfaces determines the asymptotic expansion of the metric, including the conformal infinity. As a further application, we show that renormalized area can determine the conformal structure of the boundary of a hyperbolic 3-manifold.https://events.uchicago.edu/event/231943-ga-jared-marx-kuo-stanford-university231943Apr 2, 2024 3:30 pm 4:30 pmEckhart 203If you have any questions about access or to request a reasonable accommodation that will facilitate your full participation in this event such as ASL interpreting, captioned videos, Braille or electronic text, food options for individuals with dietary restrictions, etc. please contact the event organizer.Apr 3, 2024: Computations in Science SeminarSee website for details: https://compinsci.psd.uchicago.edu/index.htmlhttps://events.uchicago.edu/event/228927-computations-in-science-seminar228927Apr 3, 2024 12:15 pm 1:15 pmIf you have any questions about access or to request a reasonable accommodation that will facilitate your full participation in this event such as ASL interpreting, captioned videos, Braille or electronic text, food options for individuals with dietary restrictions, etc. please contact the event organizer.Apr 3, 2024: [Pedagogy Seminar] John Alongi (UChicago)https://events.uchicago.edu/event/229367-pedagogy-seminar-exam-writing-workshop-for-first229367Apr 3, 2024 1:30 pm 2:30 pmEckhart 308If you have any questions about access or to request a reasonable accommodation that will facilitate your full participation in this event such as ASL interpreting, captioned videos, Braille or electronic text, food options for individuals with dietary restrictions, etc. please contact the event organizer.Apr 3, 2024: No Boundaries: Ethan DlugieApril 3rd: Geometry, Topology, and Wallpaper Groups Ethan Dlugie (UC Berkeley) (1:30-2:30 PM in Eckhart 207A) Abstract: In this expository talk, we’ll explore the fascinating story of wallpaper groups. You can consider these as discrete, cocompact subgroups of the 2-dimensional Euclidean group, or as the symmetries of those amazing patterns you see in ancient (and modern) textiles, ceramics, and tilework. Using some of your favorite bits of Riemannian geometry and algebraic topology, we’ll see how to easily classify these groups. This is a great example of different fields of math shedding light on each other. I’ll also talk about how this topic is related to an amazing theorem of Coxeter that I’ve been wanting to understand for several years now. This endosomal transport network is comprised of many components including motor proteins, endosomal effectors, lipids, and cytoskeletal elements which drive the transport of cargo through inherently stochastic interactions. The complex dynamics of endosomes and their stochastic motility characteristics in the 3-dimensional milieu demands rapid volumetric imaging. Using Lattice light-sheet microscopy along with tailored image analysis routines, two examples of ‘timekeeping’ in the endosomal network will be described - (1) collisions driving endosomal maturations and (2) a cargo-specific example of cohort-transport of EGFR-bearing endosomes. These processes and their varieties may play an essential role in endosomes as the logistical basis of signal interpretation by single cells. Further, novel ‘across-the-scales’ imaging approaches to study endosomal transport and signalling events in live, developing organisms will be described. VIPER will land at the South Pole of the Moon and spend approximately 100-days mapping and surveying four different “ice stability regions” to understand the nature and distribution of these “in-situ resources”. The information returned by VIPER will help determine how we can harvest the Moon’s resources for future human space exploration. NASA will use VIPER to determine where the Moon’s water ice is most likely to be found and easiest to access, making VIPER the first-ever resource mapping mission on another celestial body. The first in-situ resource maps of the Moon will mark a critical step forward in NASA’s Artemis program to establish a sustainable human presence on the surface of the Moon. Determining the distribution, physical state and composition of water ice deposits will also held us understand the sources of the lunar polar water. giving us insight into distribution and origin of water and other volatiles across the solar system. During VIPER’s exploration of the Moon, the rover will endure extreme temperature conditions, dynamic lighting and complex terrain, while near-real-time rover driving will present new design, engineering and operational challenges. Given any parametric elliptic functional, the anisotropic Bernstein problem asks whether the entire anisotropic minimal graphs associated to the functional in R^ are necessarily hyperplanes. A recent breakthrough regarding this problem indicates that the answer is positive if and only if n < 4. In this talk, we will talk about a Bernstein result for entire anisotropic minimal graphs in all dimensional Euclidean spaces, under assuming some certain growth condition on the anisotropic minimal graphs and C^3-closeness between anisotropic area integrands and the classical area integrand. In this talk, we will develop mathematical foundations, from the ground up, for how to carry out this vision. We will begin our investigation by examining linear dynamical systems, a simple and fundamental model of the interaction between a physical agent and its environment. We prove mathematically that simple exploration attains optimal performance for some of both the simplest and the most complex learning problems in this class. The above finding, while powerful, strongly motivates moving past linear dynamics as a mathematical testbed for understanding learning with physical agents.  Hence, we turn to providing mathematical guarantees for a setting of real-world importance that does not fit the linear mold: behavior cloning. Behavior cloning — teaching a robot to imitate from example demonstrations — lies at the heart of many of today’s most promising robot learning endeavors due to its intuitive data collection and simplicity. Though it can work incredibly well, we still do not have a clear understanding of what circumstances ensure its success. Bringing together the flexibility of generative models with key intuitions arising from the study of linear control,  we introduce a framework for behavior cloning that enables an agent to imitate nearly arbitrary behavior with provable guarantees, even when the dynamics governing the agent and environments interaction are nonlinear. We conclude by outlining ongoing work and future steps towards building out the mathematical and conceptual tooling for understanding the next steps towards general, capable and flexible physical agents.  Bio: Max Simchowitz is a postdoctoral researcher in the Robot Locomotion Group at MIT CSAIL.
